Urban Canning Co.

Illene Sofranko founded The Urban Canning Company in 2014 and quickly became known for her unexpected flavor combinations. Think Chai Grape and Smoked Tomato. (Mmmm.) As her business grew, so did the need for packaging design that better suited her business goals and breadth of product offerings. We helped her take it to the next level.

Packaging

In redesigning packaging for her hand-crafted and naturally preserved foods, such as jams, pickles, and beer mustards, we moved away from the craft paper labels and mom-and-pop vibe to a cleaner label design that would appeal to an array of retailers. The timeless design is inspired by elements of vintage European food packaging and is flexible enough to grow with her product line. Sofranko carefully chooses the freshest produce she can get her hands on from local farms, and we took the same care in considering a new look and feel for her product.

We made minor tweaks to the original logo for a better fit with her new, refined packaging. As her business grew, she also realized the importance of offering her customers ideas for using her products, and the new labels highlight those recipe ideas. Urban Canning Company products can be found locally at several locations, including Mazzaro’s Italian Market, Green Bench Brewing Co., Rollin Oats, and Brick Street Farms.

As we evolved the packaging design of the collection of jams, pickles, and mustards, we were mindful of preserving the small-batch spirit that started it all.
